The Sims 4 guide: How to garden and grow crops

The Sims 4 has a shockingly in-depth gardening system, that isn’t too hard to get started with. At its most basic level, gardening in The Sims 4 is just buying or finding seeds, planting them, tending to them, and harvesting them. However, depending on the Expansion Packs you have and your dedication to gardening, it can be much more than this.

If you have the Seasons Expansion Pack, you can also chose a Gardener career, and you’ll definitely need to work on your Sim’s Gardening skill levels to get promotions. If you’re too lazy to go through all the training to upgrade your skill level, you can always use a cheat code.

Our The Sims 4 guide explains how to get started in gardening and how to start dabbling into advanced gardening techniques.

Planting and upkeeping your garden

To get started with gardening in The Sims 4, here’s all you need to do:

  1. Have you Sim order seed packets via their phone or computer.
  2. Open the seed packets that will appear in your Sm’s inventory. This will give you full flowers or produce, rather than actual seeds.
  3. Drag the produce or flower that came out of the seed packet to where you want to plant it. Gardens can be made on bare earth on your lot or in pots.
  4. Select the produce or flower or choice and select “plant.”

You did it! You planted your first few plants. You will need to water and weed them, which will show up as selectable options as necessary, so it’s important to check on the plants every now and then.

If you have the Seasons Expansion Pack, you’ll need to also make sure the crop you’re growing is in season, which the plant will say when you hover over it.

Once you tend to a plant long enough, the option to evolve it will appear, allowing it to produce higher quality product.

Increasing your Gardening skill level

Your Gardening skill level will increase as you tend to your plants, but you can also buy gardening books and have your Sim read those to increase your skill level. After your Sim reaches Gardening skill level 2, they’ll be able to research plants on a computer, which will also increase their Gardening skill level further.

As you hit certain skill levels, you can unlock more actions to help with your gardening:

  • Gardening skill level 1: Plant, harvest, water, weed, and sell plants, buy Starter, Seasonal, and Catnip Seed Packets
  • Gardening skill level 2: Research plants, water areas at once, evolve plants, research gardening on the computer
  • Gardening skill level 3: Fertilize plants
  • Gardening skill level 4: Talk to plants, harvest areas at once
  • Gardening skill level 5: Take cuttings of plants, grafting plants
  • Gardening skill level 6: Weed areas at once
  • Gardening skill level 7: Buy Uncommon and Farmer’s Seed Packets, spray areas for bugs
  • Gardening skill level 8: Overgrow Bonsais, super sell plants
  • Gardening skill level 9: Tend garden (waters and weeds entire areas at once)
  • Gardening skill level 10: Buy Rare Seed Packets

Grafting plants

Once your Sim reaches Gardening skill level 5, you can start grafting plants. This is the only way to obtain some of the rare gardening items in The Sims 4. To do this, you’ll need to cut off a piece of one plant and graft it on to a target plant. This will allow a hybrid plant to grow, allowing for the growth of multiple produce at once.

The Sims 4 Guides: How to Plant Seeds in 3 Steps

If you have a green thumb in real life, we assume that growing plants is one of the key skills you’re focusing on in The Sims 4.

In this guide, we’ll cover the steps you need to follow in order to plant seeds and grow healthy plants.

Planting seeds in The Sims 4

Step 1 – Purchase a gardener pot or planter box

To purchase garden pots, open the Order Menu and select the pots. Or go to Build Mode > Objects by Function> Hobbies and Skills > Miscellaneous and buy the gardening pots.

You can use gardening pots both indoors and outdoor. Keep in mind that each pot can only hold one plant. If you’re planning on gardening outdoors, you can buy planter boxes. One planter box can hold four plants or one tree.

Step 2 – Buy the seeds

  1. Starter Flowers
  2. Starter Fruits
  3. Starter Herbs
  4. Starter Vegetables

Each package will give you random common flowers, fruits, herbs or vegetables. To increase the diversity of your yield, purchase multiple seed packages.

Each new level unlocks different plant seed packets including uncommon and rare plant seeds. For example, Level 4 unlocks the Seasonal Fall and Spring plants seed packets. Starting at Level 7 Gardening Skill, you can purchase Farmer Seed Packs on the computer.

Once purchased, the seed packages will appear in your inventory.

Step 3 – Plant the seeds

  1. Drag the seeds from your inventory to the gardening pot, planter box on to the ground.
  2. Select the Plant option and wait until your Sim planted all the seeds.
  3. Water the seeds by selecting the Watering option.
  4. Check your plants regularly and take out the weeds.

Tips for becoming a successful gardener

Can you grow plants indoors in The Sims 4? Sims can successfully grow plants indoors with the help of garden pots. To make sure your plants grow fast, water them regularly and place the pots near a source of light. Use fertilizer to help them grow faster.

Can you buy fertilizer in Sims 4? Players can buy fertilizer in The Sims 4 starting with Level 3 Gardening Skill. As you progress and upgrade your gardening skills, you gain access to additional types of fertilizers such as vegetables, flowers, fruits, herbs, and fish.

What is the best fertilizer in Sims 4? The best possible fertilizer in The Sims 4 is higher level fish but this option is available only when you’ve reached Gardening Skill Level 3. To be able to use fish as fertilizer, you need to improve your fishing skills so as to catch rare fish.

You can also use other plants you previously harvested to fertilize your plants while you’re at Level 1 to 3 of the Gardening Skill.

Why are my plants dying in Sims 4? There are multiple causes as to why your plants are dying in The Sims 4: they didn’t get enough water and sunlight exposure, you didn’t use enough fertilizer or you tool way too many cuttings. To avoid that, try to take only one cut from each plant. Taking anywhere between 2 to 4 cuttings could kill your plants.

Of course, the number of cuttings depends on the type of plants. But if you’re not sure, stay on the safe side and avoid taking more than one cutting.
